What do you get when you combine a great classic bike (I am rather partial to Raleighs), a great photographer, and the bike happens to be a mixte? That’s my “perfect storm”. Enjoy the stormy weather as we view Mrs. Z’s 1970s Raleigh Super Course Mixte.

Doohickie,

This is my wife’s 1970s Raleigh Super Course. It’s in pretty good shape considering its lifetime of use, though some stickers are tattered and the chrome is quite pitted.

A Wonderfully Original Bike

Still, it has the original Brooks B-66 saddle, and it fits my wife just wonderfully. I’ve added some Velo Orange fenders to it to make it more elegant and weather-worthy, and eventually I’d like to add some vintage-look lights for the night rides.

She rides smooth, and is surprisingly quick. I love the mixte design and I’ll admit to stealing a ride every once in a while. Hope you like her.

Here is one more picture lifted from Erich’s blog showing the bike before the fenders were added. I just love this bike, so much so that we have a new header picture for the blog!

I got a quick submission from lauren. One picture. If you click on the picture you can blow it up to the full resolution I received it in. I highly recommend it; you can really see the details.

Here is my g/f’s peugeot. the original lights (has holes in the frame for the wires) still work perfectly! :)

What a beautiful bike!

Here’s another submission that sat in my inbox for way too long…. so long, in fact, that the updated pictures of this bike were posted over on Old Ten Speed Gallery before I got them up here.

Very cool site. I have attached a few pics of a mixte that I just sold to a young lady in Chicago.

Time to start posting again. I kind of fell out of the habit of posting to the gallery but it’s time to get it going once more. If you’ve submitted a mixte, I still have it and will be posting it soon! The first comes from Darice

Sorry, folks, but I’ve just gotten lazy lately. I have several mixtes to post. If you’ve sent one in, don’t worry, your day in the sun is coming. I will get something new up by this weekend.

A new submission from Jon Grinder. This one is a team effort between Jon and his sister, Joy, who owns the bike and made the front basket for it.

Here’s another modern mixte, spied in the wild by the Kinya half of Mumbreeze, who writes…

Hi there,

thanks for the great Mixte Gallery! I’ve been enjoying the posts a lot.

Apologies for the background... captured in the wild, remember!

Apologies for the background... captured in the wild, remember!

I spotted a great looking mixte bike yesterday, so I thought I’d bring it to your attention.

I don’t know whose bike it is and I don’t have all the details, but it was one gorgeous bike and I couldn’t help taking pictures of it.

It’s not my bike, but I thought I’d pass it on to you anyway.

So what is this Pereira brand?

So what is this Pereira brand?

Curious, I Googled “Pereira bicycle” to find out what I could about the bike. I found out that Pereira Cycles is a framebuilder that makes “Modern Classics inspired by classics like the motorcycle-styled cruisers of the 1920s and the French “Golden Age” bikes from the 1940s and 50s” and the frames are built by Tony Pereira in Portland, Oregon. I also found this bike in his Flickr account; he built it for his friend Sharon. You can see some great pictures of the bike here.

Most of the mixtes on this gallery are older bikes. One might wonder what ever happened to the mixte? I’m happy to report that they are alive and well. And maybe a little pricey. So here are a few of the latest models in this post; the next post or two will have some modern mixtes as well.

First up is not a mixte at all, but a mixte frame that Velo Orange will be offering early next year. I wanted to include it because even without components, this is one beautiful frame.

I received tips on these from several readers, including Tom C., Geoff C. and Rollz. Thanks, guys!

One final note: I had been posting to this gallery every other day, but I wrenched my back this week while riding to work, and frankly I haven’t had the energy to keep up that pace. To those who have submitted mixtes, be patient; I’ll get your bikes up soon.

Paul,

I have an orange 1974 diamond frame UO-8 which is my primary fixed-fear bike (and one of my favorite all-time rides). When my buddy Randy found this circa 1973 orange mixte at the Goodwill, he immediately bought it and brought it to me.
